AAVE is neither the language of the uneducated or slang of the streets. It is a language. A true language just as Italian, Spanish and British English are true languages. To imply otherwise is both factually incorrect and a sign of your own ignorance in a subject you know nothing about.

I wonder how many people took the time to read this document. I mean, the whole document, like I just did. Because if you read the document, calling AAVE a “true language” is factually incorrect. It is a dialect of English, which is a pretty satisfactory categorization, but it is not a “true language” like “Italian, Spanish and British English” (British English, ironically, also not a “true language” but merely a dialect of English).

In case you think I’m making this up, from the article itself:

“So it is important that in classifying AAVE there is no dispute. For example, I keep near my desk two reference books on the languages of the world: Grimes’s Ethnologue and the Voegelins’ Classification and Index of the World’s Languages. The Ethnologue recognizes more than fifteen separate Romance Languages in Italy, while Classification and Index recognizes just three (Italian, Friulian, and Ladin). But both list AAVE as a dialect of English.

This is undoubtedly the right classification. Virtually all the words used in AAVE can be clearly identified in Standard English too, and most of AAVE grammar is the same as that of Standard English.”

So what does this mean? While spreading information to educate is an awesome thing to do, what’s even more important is to make sure you actually read that information yourself and to make sure you understand it before making a factually inaccurate statement in an attempt to tell people what is factually accurate. What’s even worse is berating people for making ignorant comments… all while making an ignorant comment.

As I’m often prone to saying: Reading is tech.

AAVE is a legitimate dialect of the the actual language known as Standard English. What it is not is a “true language.”

Let me stop you right there. I stand by my statement of AAVE being a language. I also would like to say that based on your reply, I am guessing that you are not a person who has ever been belittled or berated for using AAVE.

Since you are a fan of reading, I have something for you to read. This link from the National Science Foundation explaining the difference between dialect and language. Just in case you’ve suddenly decided that reading is only fun when you think you can tear something apart, I would like to highlight a certain paragraph for you and anyone who thinks like you. Take note of the bold:

“Many people wonder, “What’s the difference between a language and a dialect?” There are no universally accepted criteria for distinguishing them, and the difference is often a matter of degree rather than of kind. The Dictionary of Linguistics defines dialect as a variety of a language used by people from a particular geographic area. Many historical linguists view every speech form as a dialect of the older medium from which it was developed; for example, modern Romance languages such as French and Italian developed from dialects of Latin. Other linguists point out the role of historical and political developments in the formation of a dialect”

Next, I would like to ask you to put your thinking cap on. Tell me, how many languages were first classified as “Dialects” of Latin and then renamed a language unto themselves? Go ahead, I’ll wait…

Furthermore, the sentence that you highlighted, “The Oakland school board made the mistake of insisting explicitly that it was a separate language,” was talking about the MISTAKE of them trying to teach it as a language. AAVE is extremely fluid and changes not only from day to day but from region to region. It is not something that could be taught with text books.

Nuance, what it is?

While we’re on the topic, another section you highlighted, “The Ethnologue recognizes more than fifteen separate Romance Languages in Italy, while Classification and Index recognizes just three (Italian, Friulian, and Ladin). But both list AAVE as a dialect of English” should have stopped you in your tracks. By your own copy/paste job, we can see that what some call dialect, others call language. Unless you don’t see the difference between “15 separate Romance Languages” and “3” Romance languages. Just because both are calling AAVE a dialect doesn’t actually mean a whole lot when they can’t seem to agree on what a language is.

Finally, I would like to invite you to kiss my entire ass. Including, but not limited to, a post poo’d bum hole. We live our entire lives with people telling us our language is wrong, our diction is wrong and our words are wrong. We are called stupid, inferior and unintellectual because of it. That time is over. If you think I will sit idly by while you try to pick apart a language, a true language, my language, just because you’re so small minded that you need to find a reason to belittle people, you are sorely mistaken.

Don’t you ever speak to another person the way you have spoken to me. Especially on a topic you are so grossly uneducated in. I find you disgusting, trivial and weak minded.
